Common Golf Questions
Questions are good, but not everyone feels comfortable asking them, so we have compiled some frequently asked questions regarding lessons and getting started with golf. Hopefully they will help you feel more prepared!
How do I start golf?
The best point way to start your golf journey is to take a private lesson, as this provides a completely personalised session and is the fastest way to see improvement.
Start with a 60 minute private lesson to see what golf is like, then move on to a package over a three to six-month period, with tailored practice plans to help you build your swing. This level of customised coaching will have you playing and enjoying the game sooner.
You can book my private lessons via the Wembley Golf portal here.
Please contact me directly if your desired time isn’t available, as I may have some private lesson reserved, via info@claireelvidgegolf.com.
Alternatively, you may prefer to start with Group lessons or Women’s Only Clinics as an excellent way to share the learning experience. A clear Pathway to the Course program includes:
- Level 1 - basics of game
- Level 2 - development of skills
- Level 3 - preparing to play
Then after a series of clinics and lessons, my On Course or Women's Supervised Golf sessions are great options to build confidence on the course. More information about all of these lesson types are outlined on the Lessons with Claire page.
Can I organise my own group?
If you have a group of friends, family or work colleagues who want to try golf, a Private Group Lesson is the way to go. These are suited to your time and are a fun way to learn.
What equipment do I need to begin with?
In the beginning, all the equipment you need will be provided for you. You just need comfortable well-balanced footwear (no heels or thongs).
As you progress you will probably want to get your own equipment. We will discuss all options and set up a club-fit to start this process.
What do I wear?
As Wembley Golf Course is open to everyone, there are no strict golf attire requirements, so gym gear, jeans and sneakers are all acceptable attire. Of course, warm jackets in winter or hats and sunscreen in summer are a must, as we are in the beautiful outdoors.
Where can I book lessons?
All bookings can be made online via the Wembley Golf portal
I have included specific links to each of my lessons including descriptions on my Lessons with Claire page.
If you have any questions, or are still unsure of what lesson to select, please contact me directly to discuss options via info@claireelvidgegolf.com.
Where do I go for my first lesson?
The Golf Shop in the Wembley Golf complex is where you go on arrival and the friendly staff will process your lesson and direct you to the meeting place. They will give you range balls to warm up with, so it is good to arrive earlier if you can.
What should I expect for my first lesson?
I like to conduct a short assessment when we first meet that helps me identify how to best help you. Whether you are a highly skilled player, or a new golfer, I have the skills to help you reach your goals. After teaching for 30 years, I feel confident to handle all skills levels and all depths of problems you may face with your game, while keeping it fun and relaxed.
How long before I get good at golf?
It’s a difficult answer as some have more time to practice than others.
If you can achieve weekly practice for the average student 8 to 12 months should see sound development of skills in practice and on the course. Golf can be an inconsistent game during the early days, it’s one the challenges of the game - that’s why we love it!
Should I stick with one teacher?
Absolutely yes! The worst thing you can do (especially in early learning stages) is to get too much confusing information from everyone.
YouTube, mates and magazines all want to help, but there is no one posture, grip or backswing that works for every player. Your teacher is building your swing with you, so if you are improving and enjoying the lessons, then stick with them.
What do I do after the lesson?
You will be guided and assisted to move forward with your own practice and we will discuss the best practice plan for you. Also, Women's Supervised Practice is an ongoing program that suits all levels and is a flexible program for improvement.
How often do I need to take lessons?
Depending on what road you take, private or group lessons, one per week in the early stages then moving to one per month for continual improvement.
How do I get out on my own to play?
Initially our On Course sessions are the best way to learn in a controlled and relaxed environment. Once you have your confidence, we will advise the best way to keep on playing and enjoying your golf. We also have road trips and fun events throughout the year.
I’d like to buy a gift voucher for someone. How do I do that?
All lesson transactions are found at Wembley Golf website here.
